RCTCO holds Cantonese Opera Teaching Awards for Hong Kong Music Teachers 2022
The Research Centre for Transmission of Cantonese Opera (RCTCO) held a ceremony on 6 February to present the “Cantonese Opera Teaching Awards for Hong Kong Music Teachers 2022”. The awards recognise the dedication of outstanding music teachers to the promotion of Cantonese opera through innovative teaching. The ceremony was jointly organised by the RCTCO and the Xiqu Centre of the West Kowloon Cultural District, and was supported by the Rural Training College Alumni Association.
Award winners were chosen based on the contents, creativity and effectiveness of their teaching plans. The judging panel was composed of professionals from the education sector, Cantonese opera, cultural development, and other fields.
Professor Leung Bo-wah, Director of the RCTCO and head of the judging panel, said: “From the teaching plans and teaching videos submitted by the participating teachers, we can see that they have spent a lot of time arousing students’ interest in Cantonese opera. I hope that in the near future, more music teachers will join us in promoting the traditional performance art and integrate Cantonese opera into their teaching.”
The Gold Awards for the Secondary and Primary school group were given to Ms Leung On-to from New Asia Middle School, and Ms Janet Kar Wing-suet from Ng Wah Catholic Primary School respectively. Ms Leung remarked that “Students are curious about Cantonese opera and they responded positively during classes.” Ms Kar said, “When schools [in Hong Kong] emphasise nurturing students with Chinese culture, Cantonese opera serves as a perfect means for this purpose.”
